Best Basketball Apps for Apple Watch (2026): Shot Trackers and Workout Logs

An Apple Watch can log your basketball shots, but most apps still need you to mark makes or misses. Watch-first loggers like Tally Hoops and Shotistics count what you record with the Digital Crown, a tap or a wrist gesture. Hoops: Basketball Tracker and Shooting Percentage Tracker detect each shot attempt automatically, and you mark the makes or the misses. TruRep is different: it grades your shooting motion rather than counting makes.

We haven’t hands-on tested these apps. How each one counts shots comes from its own App Store listing or website, checked October 17, 2026. See how we get the data.

App How it counts shots Needs an iPhone camera? Watch requirement in the listing

How we get the data

Automatic vs. manual: how watch shot tracking works

A watch can feel your arm move, but it can’t see the hoop. So the apps split the job:

  • Automatic attempts. Hoops and Shooting Percentage Tracker use the watch to detect each shot. You still tell the app the result: Hoops has you tap for makes, Shooting Percentage Tracker has you mark misses with a hip tap or double clap.
  • Manual logging. Tally Hoops and Shotistics count only what you record, using the Digital Crown, Double Tap or a wrist turn. It’s one extra motion per shot, but nothing is guessed.
  • Camera tracking. For fully automatic make/miss counting, you need a phone camera on the hoop. Hoops can analyze iPhone video on the phone, and apps like Ball AI track makes and misses with the camera. See basketball shot tracking apps, HomeCourt alternatives and free AI basketball apps.

Tally Hoops

Tally Hoops runs as a native workout on Apple Watch, so heart rate and calories go to the Health app, per its listing. Its standout feature tags every logged shot with your heart rate to show a “Fatigue Cliff”, the heart rate where your make rate drops. It also offers hands-free voice logging: say “make” or “miss” (its listing says this works best with AirPods). Free download; in-app purchases from $4.99, including a $99.99 lifetime option.

Hoops: Basketball Tracker

Hoops works on iPhone and Apple Watch. On the watch, it detects each shot and you tap to mark makes. During a drill recorded on iPhone, the watch shows the next spot, counts your shots and saves a basketball workout to Health. Apple Watch features need watchOS 26 or later. It’s free to start, with Legend plans from $6.99 a week.

TruRep

TruRep turns the watch into a shooting-motion sensor and gives haptic feedback on the quality of each rep. Use it to groove a consistent release, not to track your percentage. Free download, with premium plans from $4.99 a month in the App Store.

Other watch apps

  • Shooting Percentage Tracker detects attempts automatically; you mark misses with a hip tap or double clap and review sessions on iPhone. A 2-day trial, then $4.99 for the full version.
  • Shotistics is free with no in-app purchases listed, but it hasn’t been updated since September 1, 2022.
  • Ball AI lists Apple Watch support on the App Store, but its listing doesn’t say what the watch app does. Its main tracking uses the phone camera.

Using the built-in Workout app for basketball

Apple’s own Workout app has a Basketball workout type, per Apple’s list of workout types. Apple says you review your workout history in the Fitness app on iPhone, but it doesn’t describe the Basketball workout as counting shots. If you want makes and misses on your wrist, use one of the apps above; Tally Hoops and Hoops save their sessions as workouts too.

FAQ

Can an Apple Watch track basketball shots? Yes, with an app. Hoops: Basketball Tracker and Shooting Percentage Tracker detect shot attempts automatically and have you mark makes or misses. Tally Hoops and Shotistics log shots you record with the Digital Crown, a tap or a wrist gesture.

What is the best Apple Watch app for basketball? For a fast, reliable count, Tally Hoops, which logs makes and misses with the Digital Crown and adds heart-rate insights. For automatic attempt detection, Hoops: Basketball Tracker (watchOS 26 or later) or Shooting Percentage Tracker. For shooting form, TruRep.

Does the Apple Watch have a basketball workout? Yes. Apple lists Basketball among the Workout app’s workout types. Apple doesn’t describe it as counting shots, so use a shot-tracking app for makes and misses.

Do I need my iPhone with me to track shots? For the watch apps here, you don’t need the iPhone’s camera: you log or detect shots on the watch. You still use the iPhone to set up the apps and review your history. Fully automatic make/miss counting needs a phone camera on the hoop.

Are there free Apple Watch basketball apps? Shotistics is free with no in-app purchases listed, but it hasn’t been updated since 2022. Tally Hoops and Hoops are free to download with paid upgrades, and Shooting Percentage Tracker has a 2-day trial.
